Today I went and picked raspberries from my friend's garden.
My original intention was to make freezer jam in a large enough quantity to sustain me for an entire year.
My next intention was to make enough to sustain me through the winter.
My final intention, the one I made once I began actually picking the berries, was simply to make ONE batch of freezer jam. You see, this was my first year picking solo and let me tell you what a difference a few helpers can make.
I started out with plenty of enthusiasm for the task at hand but it quickly began to fade. Then something kind of funny happened. Instead of bemoaning the heat or the bugs or the scratchy branches, my only thought was, "What would Jane or Julie do?" I just knew if I could think like one of them, I would have raspberries galore in no time flat. These women are two of the smartest cookies I know, and they both know a lot about almost everything. I'll bet that if it were possible to combine their collective knowledge, they might actually know everything. However, I've never actually picked ANYTHING with Jane, so I couldn't think of what she would do, and I knew Julie wouldn't be dumb enough to come without at least a couple of her kids to help. But when all was said and done I THINK I collected enough berries for two batches.
So, I get home, do a few things around the house, come around the corner, and see my brother literally shoveling handfuls of my precious berries into his mouth. In his defense, he did watch Natalie so I could go picking so I guess he earned a few handfuls. But if I come up short on that second batch you know who I'm going to blame...
Jane, for not blogging something on how to most efficiently pick raspberries.
Julie, for not reading my mind and offering to pick raspberries while she and her little pickers were in town, AND Josh for eating half of my profits!
P.S. Happy belated Birthday, Jane!

Oh ho, Camery, this one made me laugh. I agree...with Julie and I collectively we could possible know EVERYTHING, Julie being the key ingredient because Julie paired up with anybody would know EVERYTHING.
Raspberries are a bear, aren't they? They are plain boring without company.
THANK YOU for the birthday wish...this birthday just keeps lasting, thanks!
P.S. would you e-mail me please? I have a ?
Great post, Camery. I made strawberry freezer jam over the weekend (first attempt!) and cannot imagine having to pick that same quantity of fruit in raspberries. Kudos to you.
PS - my email is still paigehendrickson at yahoo.com
That was such a well written cute story! Can't wait to see you soon. BTW, you look soooooooo cute in those family reunion pictures.
THATS FUNNY. REBECKA AND JAKE ARE STILL THERE! GO GET THEM!!!
I think Jane knows FAR more than I do but I do know this...
1. I really miss doing raspberry jam with you!
2. Kids are the key to picking (and JoAnne's right, 2 of mine are still in Moses Lake)call them!
3. There is no defense for raspberry thieves!
I'm sorry I wasn't there for you and your jam ambitions. I agree with Jane, it's always better with a friend. I sent my kids out today to pick wild raspberries and they were back in 15 min. with only enough for one bowl with milk. Pitiful. Where is the Norwegian equivilent of Levita when you need her?!
